Media references to fanfic, the week ending 11/28/09

[info]fanthropology
Starting with Twilight

In a USA Today story distributed by Gannett, Maria Puente wrote, of adult engagement with things Twilight, It's moms and grandmas standing in line at theaters, reading and rereading the books, spending big bucks on the merchandise (such as Nordstrom's Twilight-themed apparel and jewelry) and writing reams of fan fiction (17,000 stories on just one fan-fiction site alone).

In the Broward New Times, Nicole Rodriguez had a piece on the upcoming Fantasy Twi-Life Tour, which will feature, among other events, autograph sessions, celebrity photo shoots, cocktail parties, and banquets, trivia, fan fiction, and more.

In the University of Guelph's The Ontarion, Duncan Day-Myron wrote Twilight is the VIP of a seemingly unstoppable all-star team of brooding, effete bloodsuckers tearing through almost every conceivable media: along with The Vampire Diaries, True Blood and The Vampire's Assistant, books, television and cinema are all pretty roundly spoken for, to say nothing of the amount of magazine covers the stars get. And in the grandstands, an army of teenage girls, fanfiction in hand, screaming for more.

In the Lexington, NC Dispatch, Matthew Lucas began a review of New Moon with The phenomenon behind the wildly popular Twilight books and the film adaptations they spawned is just one of those inexplicably faddish things that I will never understand. Author Stephenie Meyer has created a series of books that read like fan fiction written by a hormonal 15-year-old girl, filled with endless pages of breathless longing and loving descriptions of how beautiful its male protagonists are. They're trashy romance novels for the tween set. I'm thinking Lucas was the wrong dude for this gig.

And, on The Faster Times, Rachel Shukert wrote what she called anti-fan fiction, in which I make Bella Swan act less like herself and more the way I would advise her to act.

(Like last week, criticism of Twilight in the comments gets a PM from me explaining why I'd buy Stephenie Meyer a cookie)

In other news...

In a Sun Media article by published throughout Cananda, Sharon Weatherall wrote about an Ontario girl who is going to travel to Australia to meet an ailing fellow writer, thanks to the Australian Wish Foundation. Laura and Emmy became met three years ago on Fan Fiction, where participants write stories on line, then started chatting on MSN.

In the Minneapolis City Pages, Jessica Armbruster wrote a piece promoting Mulligan Stu's Do-Over Revue, "Where artsy folks will share some of the lamest train wrecks from their past." Many creative types are willing to admit that on the way to making the works that they are most proud of, there's a wake of bad art, atrocious writing, and pieces in general bad taste. This is especially true when exploring stuff from the teen and college years, be it angst-ridden poetry about vegetarianism, fan fiction from seventh grade involving characters from Scooby Doo, or a collage with hundreds of pictures of Luke Perry glue-sticked to poster board.

Finally, in the Mountain Home, Arkansas Baxter Bulletin, Deb Peterson reported the eight-year-old poet Averee Hutson has started filling a journal with fan fiction from the iCarly series.

I now own a Philips MP3/video player*. So, does anyone know how I can get my various AVI files (and DVDs) into SMV format so I can take them places with me? Preferably a free way?

*And a pair of boots that are too narrow in the heel, so I'll have to return them. :(

Edit of SQUEE: I just realized I can now conveniently listen to podfics!

oh hell yes, I have a Snuggie

[info]ponderosa121
We went down to Salinas to J's sister's new place, and holy crap is it huge. It's got a nifty layout, and infinitely more space than their old house. We hadn't seen Natalie since before she was walking so it took a while for her to stop giving J and I the suspicious eye, but by the end of the night it was lots of carry-me arms, and where Sophie is usually all about her Uncle J, somehow this time I ended up with her hanging on me more often than not. I suspect it was that I was wearing a pink shirt so that boosted my coolness rating. It's interesting to see the ways her personality has changed now that she's a big sister. Sometimes I wish we lived a bit closer in order to visit more often.

Anyway, we hung out, ate food, played with dolls, tried to devise a plan to steal their adorable pug, and at the end of the evening I got the bonus of belated b-day gifts. See subject. I have also increased my fuzzy scarf collection by one, so I should probably put out some of the ones I don't wear often out onto the curb.

The drive was nice, and J and I talked a lot about the ways in which we'd like to focus on our projects for school and general creative things. I'm back to having a solid idea of where to go with my current assignments so I'm feeling very rejuvenated about them. Which is good, as I need to be doubly-focused this weekend, since I didn't actually get any extra days off, and the lab is closed tomorrow which is typically my dedicated time to go in and work all day on my homework!

Somehow, the Friday the 13th DVDs I ordered on the 23rd, shipped on the 24th and arrived today. And they managed that with Super Saver shipping (because I'm cheap). Dude! :D

I thought the "Lewis Vendredi made a deal with the devil..." opening lasted through season two; I'm sad they cut it on the DVDs.

I wish Rashid had been in more than two episodes. He was awesome.

Wrangler RPF avec moi!

Check out the rest of the Wrangulatorverse, starting with "forma." Perhaps I shall write one myself, after I open the can of worms that is significance of name order in pairing listings in certain fandoms (and certain segments of certain other fandoms, which is gonna be the fun part) and if it's possible to do synonyms with a disambiguation option.

ETA: Pray for me. I just claimed seaQuest.

Going to hell. Again.

[info]dragovianknight
You know that Christian side hug thing I linked to earlier? Well, my brain refuses to remember the actual lyrics, beyond, "Gimme that Christian side hug," but I'm earwormed by the beat...so I'm afraid I'm coming up with alternate rhymes for "side hug", like "self love" and "butt plug". I am quite sure this sullies the purity of their white boy gangsta rap about how they're such sexual deviants they can't even hug someone without being uncontrollably turned on.

My lyrics do make about as much sense. The last round went, "I'm a rough rider/with a Jesus butt plug/So gimme that Christian side hug/ 'cause I practice self love."

Edit: It dawns on me that apparently, Fundie boys are all Edward Cullen, terrified they will be overwhelmed by Bella Swan's outrageous flavor.* See what repression gets you?

*(tm cleolinda, IIRC)

Because when there's wrangling to be done and fic to be revised or drafted, that's clearly the time for a meme. Entry not yet tagged for the fic, so as not to spoil the surprise.

Lifted from [info] longsufferingly:1. Write down the names of 10 characters.

2. Write a fic of fifteen words or less for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers. Do NOT read the prompts before you do step 1.

1. Kurosaki Hisoka (Yami no Matsuei)
2. Jin Bora (Anyband)
3. Stephanie (CSJH)
4. Jensen Ackles (CW RPF)
5. Kim Junsu (DBSK)
6. Clayman (GetBackers)
7. Elizabeth Swann (PotC)
8. Satine (Moulin Rouge)
9. Trinity (The Matrix)
10. Ben (Dark Angel)

here, have some synonyms

[info]ranalore
Put in CSJH and Chun Sang Ji Hee for CSJH. For Dong Bang Shin Ki:

DBSK
Dong Bang Shin Gi
DBSG
TVXQ
TVfXQ
Tong Vfang Xien Qi
Tohoshinki
THSK

Currently, there are no Banjun Theatre stories in the archive. Like Anyband FPF, my instinct is that it should be a distinct subfandom that's searchable on its own or as part of a DBSK search, but the ability to create subfandoms and metafandoms isn't yet in place, so if you've got a Banjun story, just put it in as a new fandom.

Now I get to decide if I want to wrangle more synonyms for CSJH or concentrate on one fandom at a time and wrangle all the synonyms for the DBSK pairings that are already in the system (oh, sweet mother of Mike). Also, I'm not quite sure what to do about the fact that Minho is both a DBSK pairing and a member of SHINee. I don't think I can wrangle it into one fandom when another's guaranteed to want to use it, even if they're in different Tag wuzzle fields.

Oh, yeah, and Chaotic Butterfly's now a fandom, and I moved The Good King to movies and threw the synonym "Good King Wenceslas" at it. Somebody let me know if there's fic for the carol and I need to change that.

ETA: Went ahead and synonymized TSZX, TJCK, Tenjo Chiki, Tenjochiki, and Tian Shang Zhi Xi (which I'm gonna have to mess with if they change the code to allow non-English accented characters).

ETA 2: THIS IS ANOTHER REASON TO HATE THAT STUPID "THE GRACE" BS. *snarls and synonymizes it, though she wants it on record that SHE OBJECTS*

I am making gifts this year

[info]dragovianknight
And you know, I love knitting, but this is a LOT of work (not to mention the OMG WON'T FINISH ON TIME! panic). It's kind of making me feel guilty for all the times I've asked to have something written/drawn/made for me, instead of just telling people to drop ten bucks on a gift card from Amazon or Knitpicks.

(On a related note, I have things for people from that meme at the start of the year, and I am SO FAILING at getting them packed up and mailed out. Bad Dragovian. Bad.)

Vital information for your everyday life

[info]veleda_k
1) School is making me crazy and my life is a bloody mess. I am on the brink, man. Ack.

2) My tea tastes soapy. Next time, I'll rinse the cup more thoroughly.

3) Highlights from working at Blockbuster: The woman who came up to me and asked if we had "The first movie in that vampire series that's out." Yeah, that really narrows it down. On a hunch, I asked if she meant Twilight. "Maybe." But she seemed happy when I pointed her to our Twilight display, so all's well that ends well. The there was the women who asked me if The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was based on a true story. Amused, I explained that Benjamin Button was about a man who was born incredibly old and aged backwards, so no. She then turned to her husband and asked if that could really happen. So yeah.

4) I have to go to the dentist so she can replace a crown that fell out. It's very odd to be going about your business when all of the sudden one of your teeth falls out.

5) Um, yeah.

DBSK: The Air Up There

[info]ranalore
The Air Up There
by Rana Eros

(DBSK, OT5, wardrobe mishaps, 200 words)
In which Changmin is tall and their designer is never allowed to go on vacation again. Ever.
Author's Notes: I want it known that Keiko totally abuses her modly power. Which is how it should be. Written for Keiko, and for the drabble challenge topic of "boots" over at dbsk_flashfic. Eliza-tested, Eliza-approved (and you shoulda heard what she was talking about).
