Writing Update and Self-Reccing
It's been a while since I had anything finished to post. Right now I'm sitting on about 11K words of unfinished fic. I think I'm roughly at the halfway point for two of them, and nearly done with the third.
So in the meantime, I'm pulling out the reruns. Ganked from toxictattoo:
Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fics favorite you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.
No tagging going on here, but I did indulge in some rambling.
1. The Royal Consort of OzL. Frank Baum's Oz Books, Ozma/? - PG. Based on a prompt from fic_on_demand, back when I was trying to write every single request where I had any knowledge of the fandoms in question. This was the first time I had written for a book fandom, and did heavy research, and tried to emulate the syle of the original. While the finished product has its problems, it's more than I thought I was capable of before I wrote it. This my most out-and-out romantic story, and utterly fluffy and feel-good, and it's nice to know I can actually pull this kind of thing off, even if I don't try it too often.
2. Greedy BonesFullmetal Alchemist, Izumi/Greed - NC-17. This one's f-locked to fma_fuh_q for mature content. While I love "Fullmetal Alchemist," I've never been all that interested in writing for the more popular pairings, because I'm satisfied with how the canon handled those relationships, and there is so much more to explore. Izumi's one of those characters who gets very little fandom love, and I wanted to play with her past with the series' arguably most terrifying Big Bad, and address some of the unanswered questions about another villain too. Along the way things got kinky and very, very weird, and I enjoyed it very, very much.
3. InversionWeiss Kreuz, Crawford/Schuldig - R I never have any problems writing "Weiss Kreuz" fanfic, particularly for the Schwartz guys, even though I have no love for the canon whatsoever. The fandom's turned the characters into these wonderfully twisted, self-destructive creatures with all sorts of fun facets to play with. This fic is definitely one of the more experimental ones, where I was playing with the narrative and some AU mind-bendiness. Lots of times I have interesting ideas that get screwed up in the execution, but this is one of those stories where I figured out how to pull off something crazy exactly the way I wanted.
4. The Beginning of the UniverseGhost in the Shell, Batou/Major Kusanagi - PG-13 It's nerve-wracking writing fanfic for canon that you know is waaaaaay over your head. "Ghost in the Shell" is one of those shows that I admire to bits, but its more human elements are buried so deep in techno-babble and philosophical discourse, I was intimidated just thinking about it. So, this story was about earning the sentimental moment for the characters while doing what I could to capture and translate as much of that bewildering universe as I could into words that I considered comprehensible. I think I did a pretty good job.
5. The Third ReplicantYami No Matsuei/Blade Runner Fusion, Tsuzuki/Hisoka - PG-13. Oh Yami no Matsuei, I love you so. While "Thirty Tortures" was a lot of fun, this story was a lot more satisfying to write because I felt like I was doing something different with the characters. Most of fandom loves to torture these poor shinigami, but I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who's written a sci-fi detective noir around them where Tsuzuki gets to fight killer androids. This was written for a fusion challenge, which means I combined the Yami no Matsuei universe with a different canon, namely Blade Runner, the 1982 Harrison Ford film. I love that I can say without a doubt that no prior knowledge of the film is necessary to read the story.
